Val Thorens sits at 2,300 metres, higher than any other resort in Europe, and everything about a Christmas here follows from that one fact. When lower resorts are running a few pistes on manufactured snow in late December, Val Thorens is usually open properly, top to bottom, with the Péclet glacier above it.

It is a purpose-built resort and it looks like one — this is not a place you come for timber balconies and a church in the square. What you get instead is ski-in/ski-out in its most literal form, because almost every building in the resort is on the snow, and access to the Three Valleys, the largest linked ski area in the world. For a group that wants to ski hard for seven days and walk to the lift in their boots, nothing else in this guide competes.
