The most beautiful setting in the Alps, and an elegant Italian town that happens to have skiing.
Cortina sits in a bowl surrounded by the pale vertical towers of the Dolomites, and there is no more dramatic place to spend Christmas in this guide. It is a proper town — elegant, expensive, with a pedestrianised main street of serious shops and a long tradition of being seen.
The skiing is spread across several separate areas reached by bus rather than linked by lift, which frustrates people who expect a French-style circuit. It is scenic, sunny and mostly intermediate. At 1,224 metres the town is low, so December cover depends on the year and on the substantial snowmaking. Cortina hosts the 2026 Winter Olympics alpine events, and the investment that has come with that is visible.
