Three Ladin villages in the Dolomites, on the Sellaronda circuit and the vast Dolomiti Superski pass.
Val Gardena is a valley rather than a resort — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva, three villages with their own Ladin language and a woodcarving tradition that goes back centuries. Selva at 1,563 metres sits at the top of the valley and is the most convenient base for skiing.
The skiing is part of Dolomiti Superski, the largest lift pass in the world, and the Sellaronda circuit takes you right around the Sella massif in a day. The terrain is mostly cruising intermediate with the famous Saslong World Cup downhill as the exception. The scenery is extraordinary throughout.
Christmas in Val Gardena
Excellent and distinctive. The Ladin villages have a Christmas tradition that is neither Italian nor Austrian but something of its own, with markets, carved nativity scenes and a genuine sense of place. Ortisei in particular is a delight in late December.
If you are not skiing
Very good. Ortisei is beautiful to walk around, there are markets and woodcarving workshops, and the Alpe di Siusi plateau is a spectacular and easy outing.
