The Matterhorn, year-round glacier skiing, and a car-free village that is among the loveliest in the Alps.
Zermatt is dominated by the Matterhorn in a way that photographs do not quite prepare you for — it is visible from most of the village and from almost all of the skiing. The resort is car-free, reached by train up the Mattertal, and the centre is a genuine old Valais village of dark timber granaries on stone staddle stones.
The skiing is the highest in Europe, running up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, which means lift-served snow at Christmas regardless of what the valley does. The area is vast, largely high and open, and links over the ridge into Cervinia in Italy. It is also among the most expensive weeks you can buy in the Alps.

If you are not skiing
