Courchevel is where the French Alps go to be expensive. It has more Michelin stars than any other ski resort in the world, the piste grooming is close to obsessive, and the top villages are a parade of chalets that cost more per week than most cars.

Beneath the price tag is genuinely first-rate skiing. The nursery slopes are among the best anywhere, the tree-lined runs down to Le Praz are lovely in bad weather, and the whole Three Valleys is on the pass. Courchevel is a collection of villages at different altitudes rather than one resort, and which one you stay in changes the holiday completely.

Glossy. Courchevel at Christmas is fur coats, window displays and a lot of money being spent well. The Christmas Eve descent and fireworks are among the best staged in the Alps. It is not cosy, but for a group that wants the week to feel like an event, nothing in France does it better.

Excellent by ski-resort standards — serious restaurants, real shops, spas, and an ice rink — though all of it at Courchevel prices.
